Luna Moth (roadside, Acadia National Park, Maine)
Spotted this moth in the short grass alongside the road at 40mph! This is a large moth, five inches across. They have no working mouthparts and only live about a week after emerging from their cocoon. They are nocturnal, but this one was in such short grass that it couldn’t get a long enough down-beat with its wings to take off, so it was stuck out in the open in daylight. After photographing it, I gave it a lift and it flew off into the forest. Fuji X-Pro1, 35mm, 1/180th @ f5.6, ISO 200
